Different Specific Syndromes in Children

Speech Therapy plays an important role in the treatment of individuals with Down’s Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), and Sensory Processing Disorder.

Down’s Syndrome

Speech Therapy plays an important role in the treatment of individuals with Down’s Syndrome. Speech and language therapy improves, supports, and develops speech, language, and communication skills. Speech and language therapy additionally helps with any difficulties the individual may have with eating, drinking, and swallowing.
Persian Speech Clinic can offer a range of effective interventions for children with Down’s Syndrome. The type of intervention chosen will be specific to the individual’s needs and abilities. Our team will use the individual’s strengths i.e. use of non-verbal communication to support their speech and language learning.

Some Speech Therapy goals can be:

  • Improve oral motor skills
  • Develop eating and drinking skills
  • Develop emerging language skills
  • Improve and develop speech sounds
  • Improve more complex speech disorders
  • Increase vocabulary

Fragile X Syndrome

A high percentage of individuals with Fragile X syndrome will experience difficulties in their speech, language, and communication. Individuals with Fragile X syndrome may additionally have problems with their eating, drinking, and swallowing.
Children with Fragile X syndrome will often present with delayed speech and language development. Speech and language therapy helps to develop and improve speech, language, and communication and aims to maximize the individual’s communication to their highest potential.

Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)

Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) is the term used to refer to a group of disorders that are characterized by developmental delays in social and communication skills.

There are five types of Pervasive Developmental Disorders:

  • Autism
  • Asperger Syndrome
  • Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
  • Rett’s Syndrome
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS)

Speech and language therapy will focus on improving, supporting, and developing the communication skills of individuals with Rett Syndrome. Speech and language therapy will plan intervention throughout the stages of Rett syndrome to meet the specific needs and abilities of the individual. Therapy will reflect the chronological age and interests of the individual and will be adapted accordingly as they grow e.g. appropriate vocabulary and activities.

Sensory Processing Disorder

For individuals with Sensory Processing Disorder, Speech Therapists will generally help to increase verbal skills, improve articulation, and strengthen oral-motor control. They can also help individuals to expand their language skills which are often decreased due to vestibular or auditory dysfunction.
