Speech and Language Delay
What Is Speech and Language Delay?
Most children develop speech and language skills within a specific age range. A child who takes longer to learn a skill may have a problem.
Language delays are the most common type of developmental delay. One out of 5 children will learn to talk or use words later than other children their age. Some children will also show behavioral problems because they are frustrated when they can’t express their needs or wants.
Simple speech delays are sometimes temporary and with the help of a Speech Therapist, families will understand the nature of the delay and learn how to help their child. It is significant not to wait and see. It’s important to encourage your child to talk to you and for you to spend a lot of time playing with, and reading to your child.
Speech Therapy for Your Child
Our team will help your child learn to communicate and to compensate for their speech and language skills.
Sometimes delays may be a warning sign of a more serious problem that could include hearing loss, developmental delay in other areas, or even an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Language delays in early childhood also could be a sign of a learning problem that may not be diagnosed until the school years. It’s important to have your child evaluated by a Speech Therapist if you are concerned about your child’s language development.
